Toast Radio

Streaming Music Broadcast

Starting with an unreleased beta of SoundJam MP for Mac OS X and a fixed playlist, Toast Radio expanded to be a 24-hour streaming music station with website, queueing, and a clock wheel schedule featuring nearly 30,000 songs. It provided a ready playground to try out new programming languages and methods, frameworks, and designs.

  • Uses a PHP utility to parse iTunes’ XML and create a SQL database for use by the website and remote scheduling, keyed off each track’s persistent ID
  • Extracts cover art with Applescript and saves out an original and formatted copy for the website
  • Live encoding of a 128k MP3 stream and a 64k HE-AAC stream
  • Created desktop widgets usable for any stations streaming through Live365
  • Winner of Live365’s Best Indie Music Station and Best Station to Discover New Music awards
